Ideas
Institutions decide what the problem is, what capability is missing, who is ready and what counts as credible. The frameworks through which those judgements are made are rarely examined.
Each idea below is traced through the same four stages: the idea itself, the writing that develops it, the institutional setting in which it was applied, and the record that can be checked.
01
Idea
Inherited Frameworks
Frameworks are useful because they allow us to organise complexity. They become dangerous when their assumptions disappear from view.
This work examines what happens when frameworks developed within particular historical, cultural or institutional conditions become treated as universal measures of capability, leadership, merit or progress.
Writing
Application
Tested inside global networks and multilateral institutions, where selection, readiness and capability judgements are made in practice.
02
Idea
Contextual Coherence
Context is not an adjustment made after the strategy has been designed. It is part of reality itself.
Contextual coherence asks whether the assumptions, structures, relationships, incentives and ways of knowing inside an institution actually fit the environment in which that institution is trying to operate.
Writing
Application
Practised through organisational diagnostics, advisory work and Depthwork, the method through which coherence between institution and context is examined.
03
Idea
Leadership, Identity & Authorship
Leadership is often taught as a collection of competencies. The earlier body of work asks a different question: who is the person performing those competencies?
Identity, belonging, authority, fear, history and inherited expectations shape leadership long before technique enters the room. The work therefore moves from performance toward authorship: the ability to lead from examined judgement rather than inherited scripts.
Writing
Application
Applied through coaching and leadership development with more than 130 C-suite and senior leaders, and through the Leadership Awards, founded in the United Kingdom in 2016.
04
Idea
Institutions, Power & Legitimacy
Institutions do more than coordinate work. They produce definitions. They decide what constitutes evidence. They create categories of capability. They determine which knowledge is credible. They distribute legitimacy.
The question is therefore not simply whether an institution works. It is also this: what reality is the institution designed to recognise?
Writing
Application
Carried into governance and institution-building: board stewardship at the Global Schools Forum, and the founding of the Alliance for Women and Girls in January 2023.

Launching 12 October 2026
Borrowed Mirrors: How the Frameworks We Trust Decide Who and What Counts examines what happens when institutions use inherited lenses whose assumptions are rarely questioned, and asks what it would take to build ways of seeing that are more coherent with the realities they are intended to serve.
