About

Vongai Nyahunzvi

Author · Adviser · Institution-builder

Vongai Nyahunzvi has spent more than two decades working at the intersection of leadership, institutions and the systems through which people decide what counts.

That work has moved through corporate organisations, an independent advisory practice established in 2012, fifteen years across the United Nations system, senior global leadership at Teach For All, board governance, coaching of more than 130 senior and C-suite leaders, and institutions she has founded herself. She has worked inside institutions, advised them from outside, held responsibility for them and built new ones.

Equinexus Partners and Borrowed Mirrors are among the newest expressions of that longer inquiry. They are not where it began.

Formation

How the practice was built

The record begins around 2002, in corporate and organisational work: people, talent, organisational development, leadership and the messy business of changing how organisations behave. That period taught her to read organisations from the inside, where decisions are actually made.

From 2007, her work extended across the United Nations system and continued there for roughly fifteen years. It included leadership and management development, senior assessment, organisational capability building, Resident Coordinator related work, Country Team facilitation and strategic retreats, in settings as different as Sierra Leone, Lesotho, Eritrea, Uganda, Seychelles and Mauritius.

In April 2012 she established VCN, her own advisory practice, working with corporate, public sector, multilateral and social impact organisations. It did not close when she later took executive roles: it has run in parallel throughout, and it is where much of the coaching of chief executives, directors general, ministers and heads of agencies has taken place.

Working across systems that resembled one another so little is what turned a career into an inquiry. The same leadership language behaved differently in each of them.

A pattern

Four things she built

Across four different decades of her working life, the same instinct recurs: when a capability, a platform or a conversation did not exist, she built it.

  • April 2012

    VCN Consultancy Services

An independent advisory practice working across corporate, public sector, multilateral and social impact organisations. It has continued in parallel with every role since.

  • 2016

    The Leadership Awards

A public platform in the United Kingdom concerned with leadership and with what gets recognised as leadership.

  • January 2023

    Alliance for Women and Girls

A membership alliance that works with organisations across 23 African countries.

The Leadership Awards: a platform, nine years before Equinexus

In 2016, from the United Kingdom, Vongai founded the Leadership Awards. It was not an award she received. It was a platform she created, in order to put a public question into circulation: which leadership do we notice, and which leadership do we overlook?

An awards evening, honorary awards and a cohort of finalists gave that question a room, a stage and an audience. The concern is recognisable a decade later in Depthwork, in the Alliance for Women and Girls and in Borrowed Mirrors. The subject was already recognition, and who holds the authority to confer it.

The archive of that year is held privately. A short film of the awards survives.

Responsibility

Leading inside institutions, and governing them

In 2017 she joined Teach For All as Head of Region for Africa, and later became Chief Network Officer while retaining the regional leadership. When she assumed regional responsibility, Teach For All had partners in three African countries. By the time she left, its ecosystem of existing and prospective partners extended across more than fifteen African countries.

What matters in that period is not the growth figure. It is that the growth had to be locally authored. Organisations were being built by people in their own contexts, and her job was to support that without exporting a template. It is difficult to hold a global role and resist the pull of standardisation, and that tension became one of the central questions of her writing.

From 2021 to 2026 she served as a Trustee of Global Schools Forum, and as Co-Chair during the final two years of that board tenure, from 2024 to 2026. Governance taught her the view from the other side of the table: what boards can see, what they cannot, and how institutions decide what counts as evidence.

Adviser, executive, founder, governor. Few people have occupied all four positions, and the difference between them is the material of her current work.

The writing

An inquiry that changed as the practice changed

The books are not a set. They are a record of a question that kept moving: from leadership, to interior formation, to identity and power, and finally to the institutions and frameworks that decide whose knowledge counts.

  1. 2016

Leading from Within · Leadership Syndrome

Leadership treated as identity, assumption and judgement rather than technique.

  2. 2023

    Lead, Don't Self-Sabotage

The interior patterns that quietly undermine people building organisations.

  3. 2025

    Reveal Yourself

Identity, truth and power, and the leadership that becomes possible without performance.

  4. 2026

    Borrowed Mirrors

The question moves outward, to institutions, context, knowledge and legitimacy.

Now

The current work, and what it rests on

Equinexus Partners, founded in 2025, is where the practice now sits: organisational diagnostics, advisory work with leadership teams, Depthwork, and public dialogue about how institutions form judgement. The Alliance for Women and Girls, founded in January 2023, continues to work with organisations across 23 African countries.

Borrowed Mirrors: How the Frameworks We Trust Decide Who and What Counts launches on 12 October 2026. It is the synthesis of two decades of noticing the same thing from different seats: that the frameworks institutions inherit quietly determine whose capability is legible and whose is not. She writes on these questions in The Reckoning.

Daughter of the Soil: Sowing Seeds of Hope, which premiered in Nairobi in 2025, belongs to the same body of work rather than to a list of accolades.
